When undertaking a project like building a shed it will be much easier with a set of plans or shed blueprints. I have often been guilty of undertaking projects for which I have a plan in my head but nothing on paper. Although this usually ends up working in the end, the path to completion always seems to take longer than I planned. It becomes even worse if I have help and no way to communicate my vision. I end up spending all my time explaining the details of the plan in my head and very little time actually working. Not a good scenario, especially since I need to complete projects in order to make a living.
So how does this all apply to those of you thinking of building your own shed? After all, it's just a simple shed, a few walls and a roof. Well for starters, what pitch were you planning on making your roof? Are your studs going to be sixteen on center or two foot? What kind of foundation are you planning? Will you even need a foundation? These are just a few of the many questions that need answering.
With no shed blueprints will you be able to create a materials list at all? Without a materials list how many extra trips are you going to have to make for supplies? Whether you buy plans or draw them up yourself, the time spent in the planning stage will be both time and money saved during the construction of your new shed. What should you consider in choosing shed blueprints? The first thing you need to look at is the uses you want to get out of your shed. If it is going to be storage for your yard tools, then a very simple shed of appropriate size is in order. If you are planning on using your shed as an outdoor office or even a place to play cards without any complaints about the cigar smoke, then you will have some different considerations. Look at your needs and determine what features best will fulfill them.
Once you have your blueprints in hand, you can generate a materials list. Some online shed blueprint suppliers offer an already completed materials list for you. Take this list to different suppliers and get a quote on their price. Often they will compete with each other for your business. Some will even deliver the materials for free. Build a relationship with your sales rep. They will likely be very helpful if you hit a snag during your project. Most are very knowledgeable and will be happy to help.
Get a few friends together to help, offer food and drinks, and if you finish in time, even a few rounds of cards may be in order. With some good planning, you may be able to finish in a weekend.
